Melia Xuan Zhang
Melia Xuan Zhang is a music educator, theatre artist, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Her musical journey began at the age of three and led her to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she received professional training in musicology and opera production. She later earned a Master's degree in Theatre from the State University of New York, expanding her artistic perspective across music, theatre, storytelling, and performance.
With more than 15 years of international experience, Melia has worked across Beijing, Shanghai, New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Italy, participating in more than 20 international opera and theatre productions. Her artistic experience includes work with organizations and festivals such as the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Wuzhen Theatre Festival, Manhattan Theatre Club, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and San Francisco Opera.
Today, Melia also works as a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Educator with the San Mateo–Foster City School District, where she supports children's social-emotional development and learning.
A Teaching Approach Shaped by Social-Emotional Learning and the Performing Arts
Her experience in both education and the performing arts has shaped a teaching approach that connects music, creativity, emotional development, and self-expression. She believes that music education can help children develop not only musical skills, but also confidence, resilience, and a deeper understanding of themselves.
Over the years, Melia has worked with more than 100 children and families, using music and theatre education as a long-term pathway for children's growth and development. For many of these families, music has been part of their children's educational journey toward higher education and future opportunities.
As an educator and researcher, Melia combines professional musical training with individual child-centered pedagogy. Her lessons may include piano technique, music reading, ear training, music theory, repertoire, improvisation, creative exploration, and performance preparation—adapted to each child's age, personality, learning style, and goals.
Music Education Beyond the Instrument
At AiOpera, Melia brings together her experience as a musicologist, performing artist, educator, and SEL practitioner to create a learning environment where children can grow both musically and personally.
Her goal is not simply to teach children how to play the piano, but to help them discover their own voice through performance arts.
